Be forewarned: this story exposes naked romantic incompetence. I was at dinner with two friends. Both lesbians, one married, the other single. The meal was outstanding. The conversation simultaneously soulful and piss-yourself-funny. In short, a top five evening. And, yes, I was flirting with my single friend. Or at least I thought I was. There was eye contact; there were touchings of the arm and leanings-in while making a point; there was mutual recognition that we had a lot in common. The conversation turned to dating, specifically that for my friend (who is herself stunning) love tends to come in at the eyes. She notices physical beauty first, then looks for compatibility. I said that I don't have that luxury, that I need to rely on other qualities to compensate because no one will ever see me across a crowded room and think, "Gotta have that!" In adorable unison, perhaps even harmony, they sang their disagreement. "Absolutely not! That is just not true." Wha...

Wow, That's Me, Part 3 (of 3)

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see. Edgar Degas Below are some portraits shot by photographer Samuel Avery during our session on Capturing The Trans-Feminine Experience. As much as I'd like to comment on the end result, I'll let Sam's art speak for itself. I am in awe of our collaboration. If you're queer, consider booking a session with Sam. Worth every denarius! If you're not, browse Sam's galleries and learn a little something about us. One sees what one wants to see. Book Review: The Pride Omnibus

A little background before I talk about this graphic novel: I'm participating in the Zibby 22 in 22 challenge . The premise is simple and fun. Visit 22 bookstores in 2022. I altered the rules for myself in that I only hit used bookstores, and I must buy something for the visit to count. In May, I was in NYC and decided to try Midtown Comics. They had no used or discounted section, but they are a landmark comic shop. So it was that I paid full price ($30) for a compilation of a comic book series I'd never heard of. Joe Glass's The Pride Omnibus (Dark Horse Comics, 2021) was a disappointment. It's much more tell than show, which is a fatal flaw in a graphic medium. Characters have page-long monologues about LGBTQ "issues." Ultimately, the book achieves the very result it set out to prevent. The flamboyant Fabman (a superman knock-off) wants to improve queer visibility in the superhero community. He sets out on the time-honored "putting the band together...
